Since the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t going away — and, thanks to the omicron variant, is spreading faster — many Salt Lake County restaurants, as they did last winter, are extending their patio season to give patrons a safer way to eat out.
The Salt Lake Tribune called around to find out which restaurants are still offering outdoor seating. We also checked on their mask policies, with most reporting that they are observing guidelines issued by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — as well as the 30-day emergency order issued by Dr. Angela Dunn, executive director of the Salt Lake County Health Department, which requires people to wear face masks (preferably N95s, KN95s and KF94s) while in indoor public settings.
Diners must be masked when entering, exiting or when visiting the restroom, but may remove them when seated at their table. A handful of restaurants responded that they “encourage” rather than require masks, or said it was up to the patron.
Though this list does not include restaurants using structures like igloos or domes (as health department officials noted last year, it’s not any safer than eating indoors), there are a few establishments that use tents and similar semi-enclosed spaces. Diners are encouraged to dress for the weather, with hats, gloves and warm coats.
