Utah looked like it could’ve been without a key defensive lineman when it opens Big 12 play this weekend. But the tide has seemingly changed in the Utes’ favor.
Utah released its first availability report of the regular season on Wednesday night ahead of its matchup against Iowa State this weekend. The second report was released on Thursday night.
According to the latest update, three players were listed as probable and another three listed as out for the game.
And one name jumps out: defensive tackle Karson Kaufusi.
The sophomore — who started the week listed as questionable — is now listed as probable for this weekend’s contest. Kaufusi started Utah’s first three games of the season. He’s been an impact player for Utah’s defensive line, recording six tackles and one sack.
Defensive end Kash Dillon was added to the injury report on Thursday. He’s now probable to play against Cyclones.
Wide receiver Mana Carvalho was upgraded to probable, while offensive lineman Isaiah Garcia was downgraded to out.
Carvalho has two catches for 38 yards on the season and has returned four punts. Garcia has seen some time as a reserve against Arkansas and Utah State.
Safety Marcus Wimberly and tight end Kana’i Lopes are listed as out. Wimberly has appeared in two games this season, while Lopes has yet to play.
Iowa State, meanwhile, had a whopping 23 players on its availability report, with 12 players listed as questionable and three listed as out on Wednesday. The Cyclones now only have eight players on the report in the report released on Thursday
For Big 12 matchups, teams must release availability reports three days before kickoff and then daily leading up to the game. A final report is released 90 minutes before kickoff.
Even with the lengthy injury report, Iowa State will offer the Utes their first true test of the season. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. Mountain time Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
