Morgan Scalley’s first full season as Utah’s head coach kicks into gear on Aug. 3, when the Utes open fall camp.
The U. is coming off an 11-2 season, capped off by a win over Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl. Since then, Scalley has had eight months to place his own stamp on the Salt Lake City program.
But with a new staff — due to the mass exodus of coaches that followed Kyle Whittingham to Michigan — and new players, Scalley’s Utes have plenty of questions surrounding the program as he begins Year 1.
Here are the three biggest storylines facing the program heading into fall camp:
Will Utah’s offensive line be any good?
Utah had one of the best offensive line units in the country last season, anchored by offensive tackles Caleb Lomu and Spencer Fano, who both went in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft last April.
The Utes also lost all three interior offensive linemen starters. That means new offensive line coach Jordan Gross has a big task on his hands trying to get the program’s offensive trenches in shape.
Utah already has a group of upperclassmen in Solatoa Moea’i, Keith Olson, Alex Harrison, Roger Alderman and Zereoue Williams to lean on for experience.
Five-star freshman offensive tackle Kelvin Obot should be in the mix, as well. Scalley also added some talent in the transfer portal, signing Ohio State transfer Isaiah Kema and Montana State transfer Cedric Jefferson.
While this group might not reach the lofty expectations set by last season’s offensive line, the Utes will need them to at least be serviceable to have a chance at a run in the Big 12.
How will Utah utilize Byrd Ficklin?
Senior quarterback Devon Dampier will be the bona fide starter at quarterback for Utah this season.
But his backup, sophomore Byrd Ficklin, is no slouch either.
Last season, Ficklin rushed the ball 61 times for 513 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns.
Much of his work came in relief of Dampier, who dealt with multiple nagging injuries throughout the season. So with Dampier healthy, what will Ficklin’s role look like?
Utah expects to use him similarly to how it did in 2025.
A little bit of running. A little bit of passing.
Utah offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven has said he thinks Ficklin will be like Utah’s Swiss Army knife. We won’t know exactly what that means until we see the sophomore quarterback on the field.
Can Morgan Scalley live up to Kyle Whittingham?
There is no doubt about the legacy Kyle Whittingham left behind at Utah.
In 21 seasons, the now-Michigan head coach led the program to three conference titles and 177 wins.
And even if his exit was uglier than imagined, Whittingham’s still the greatest coach in program history.
Scalley will have to try to live up to the standard set by his predecessor, and many think the new head coach has the roster and talent to win immediately.
Can Scalley live up to the hype? How will he handle the role of head coach on game days? Will he have the same winning pedigree as the legend before him?
Those are all questions that will be answered in time. But this much is clear: Scalley has big shoes to fill in his first season as Utah’s head coach.
