Andre Miller, undoubtedly, is one of the greatest Runnin' Utes of all time.
He helped lead the program to the 1998 national championship with Hall of Fame head coach Rick Majerus. Miller then went on to play 17 seasons in the NBA before retiring in 2017.
Could Miller now be a target to join new Runnin' Utes head coach Alex Jensen’s staff?
“Whenever he reaches out to build out his staff and so forth, then that conversation will be had,” Miller told The Salt Lake Tribune on Friday.
Miller finds himself in the coaching ranks as the head coach for the G League’s Grand Rapids Gold.
There was reportedly interest in Miller joining former Utah head coach Craig Smith’s staff last offseason, but the two sides ultimately went different directions. Miller had also been rumored to be among the possible candidates to replace Smith at the U.
Now with Jensen — his former teammate from Utah — leading the program, Miller could be targeted to become an assistant on Utah’s staff.
For now, Miller is focused on finishing his third season with the Gold. He still takes a lot of pride in his alma mater, however.
“I mean, a lot of us guys that went to the University of Utah take a lot of pride in athletics and with the university,” Miller said.
Miller said he hasn’t spoken to Jensen much recently.
“He’s still employed by the Dallas Mavericks and, as fast as things are moving, he definitely [has] a lot to think out, obviously transitioning his family back to Utah,” Miller said.
But the legendary Ute point guard said he was happy for his former teammate.
“Being born and raised in Utah ... I’m sure it’s an exciting time for him, and I’m sure it’s a tough transition too just because he’s been in the NBA world so long and been to the Finals with the Dallas Mavericks,” Miller said. “Now, having to jump to college, that’s a question for him, and how he sees that entire situation. Either way, it’s a blessing to be able to coach at any level. I’m sure he’s excited about that.”
