Avery Neff suffered severe sprains to both of her ankles, she announced on Monday morning.
Utah’s star freshman was injured during the final tumbling pass of her floor routine against Iowa State on Friday night.
Immediately, she fell to the mat and grabbed her left ankle before being carried out by the Red Rock’s medical personnel.
“Thank you to everyone for the incredible love and support over these last few days,” Neff wrote. “After sustaining a severe sprain in both ankles this weekend, I’m grateful to share that it’s nothing worse. Injuries are a part of this sport and unfortunately a part of my journey this year.”
Neff was already beginning to establish herself as one of the best gymnasts on the Red Rocks. She took first on vault and beam against the Cyclones, scoring 9.9 and a career-high 9.925, respectively.
It’s unclear whether or not Neff will return to Utah’s lineup this season.
“I’m confident the team will continue to perform strong in my absence,” Neff said. “I’ll be cheering them on every step of the way in my absence and can’t wait to be back, stronger than ever, in no time!”
