Quarterback Cam Rising’s time with the Utes seems to have come to an end.
But his next steps remain a secret for now.
“I’ve talked to Cam a few times, but that is really up to him ... to divulge what his plan is,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said Tuesday. “But we’ve certainly had communication and you don’t see him on our roster right now. So that can tell you some things right there.”
Whittingham spoke to reporters this week for the first time since the NCAA Transfer Portal window closed — all without a public announcement from the Ute quarterback or his camp.
The seventh-year quarterback suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Utah’s 27-19 loss to eventual Big 12 champion Arizona State on Oct. 11. In that game Rising had just returned to the lineup after missing three consecutive games with a right-hand injury he suffered against Baylor, where he was shoved into the team’s water coolers.
Rising finished the season completing 34 of his 66 passes for 555 passing yards for seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He remains one of the winningest quarterbacks in program history, ranking fifth with 20 career wins in 28 starts.
The quarterback helped lead Utah to two Pac-12 championships in 2021 and 2022. Utah, likely, will move forward with New Mexico transfer quarterback Devon Dampier as its starter in 2025.
Dampier followed Utes offensive coordinator Jason Beck to Salt Lake City this offseason after he and now-Utah State head coach Bronco Mendenhall left the Lobos.
