Utes land a quarterback — potentially their starter — from transfer portal

Utah football lost three quarterbacks to the transfer portal this offseason.

Utah landed a commitment from New Mexico transfer quarterback Devon Dampier on Wednesday evening.

The sophomore quarterback’s commitment comes after the Utes hired his former play caller in New Mexico, Jason Beck, to be the program’s next offensive coordinator last week

In 2024, Dampier led the No. 4-ranked offense in the nation, garnering 2,768 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with the Lobos. He also made an impact on the ground, finishing with 155 carries, 1,166 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.

Dampier is the first incoming transfer to commit to the Utes this offseason. His decision comes at a good time, especially after Utah lost freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson, sophomore quarterback Brandon Rose and senior quarterback Sam Huard to the transfer portal.

It is also expected that seventh-year quarterback Cam Rising’s time in Salt Lake City has come to a close, according to a report from 247Sports. It is unclear whether or not Rising will opt to enter the portal, which closes on Dec. 28, or enter the 2025 NFL Draft.

It is likely Dampier is now in line to be Utah’s starting quarterback of the future under Beck. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining and, with his commitment official, he will play at the Power 4 level for the first time in his career.
