Utah QB Cam Rising’s ‘current expectation’ is to not return to Utes in 2025

The seventh-year senior quarterback’s time with the Utah program has reportedly come to an end after two seasons marred by injuries.

Seventh-year quarterback Cam Rising is “not expected” to return as Utah’s starting quarterback in 2025, according to a report from 247Sports.

It is unclear whether or not Rising will opt to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal for an eighth season of eligibility or will test the waters in the 2025 NFL Draft.

After leading the Utes to the 2021 and 2022 Pac-12 titles, Rising has only appeared in three games since tearing his ACL at the end of Utah’s Rose Bowl loss to Penn State two years ago.

He started the 2024, but — in his second appearance — he suffered a right-hand injury after being shoved into Baylor’s Gatorade coolers midway through the first half on Sept. 7.

Rising missed three-straight games before returning to the lineup against Arizona State. In that contest, the seventh-year quarterback suffered and played through a season-ending ankle injury. He finished that game 16 of 37 in the pocket with 209 passing yards and three interceptions in a game where the Utes suffered a 27-19 loss to Arizona State.

Rising would finish his career as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in program history, completing 63.1% of his passes for 6, 127 passing yards, 57 passing touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

He played in 30 career games and started in 28 with Utah. Rising ranks fourth all-time in program history for career passing and total (65) touchdowns. 2022 and 2021 were some of his best seasons at the helm, where he earned 2021 first-team All-Pac-12 honors and was the MVP of the 2022 Pac-12 championship win against USC.

Rising was last seen on the sideline of Rice-Eccles Stadium for Utah’s senior day loss against Iowa State several weeks ago. There, he donned a walking boot and a wrap on two fingers of his throwing hand.

A formal decision on his future will likely be made before the transfer portal closes on Dec. 28.
