The University of Utah has hired New Mexico’s Jason Beck to become the program’s next offensive coordinator.
The U. announced the hire late Thursday night.
Beck spent the last season in the same role for the Lobos, leading one of the nation’s most high-powered offenses.
This season, New Mexico:
• Ranked 4th in total offense, averaging 484 yards per game.
• Scored 49 offensive touchdowns (294 points).
• Averaged 253.6 rushing yards per game, good for fifth-best rushing attack in the entire country.
• Had the 28th-ranked scoring offense, averaging 33.5 points per game.
Beck, 44, was in his first season with the Lobos after spending two seasons with Syracuse, where he was the program’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
In Beck’s lone season calling plays for the Orange, they averaged 25.5 points per game through 12 contests. SU’s offense ranked as the third-worst in the ACC that season, just ahead of Wake Forest and Pitt, averaging 343.3 yards per game and 171 passing yards per game.
Before that, Beck was a quarterbacks coach at Virginia from 2016-21 and in-state rival BYU from 2013-15. With the Cougars, Beck helped develop now-New Orleans Saints do-everything quarterback Taysom Hill.
Now, the Oxnard, California, native will shift his focus to taking over the Utes’ offense in Salt Lake City. His hire comes after the Utes struck out on now-Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich earlier this week.
For the past two seasons, Utah’s offense struggled to find its rhythm under Andy Ludwig, who resigned during the season. After finishing the season with a 28-14 win over UCF, the Utes officially ended their 2024 campaign ranked second to last in the Big 12 in total offense.
After starting off the season undefeated, the Utes — hampered by their struggles on offense — went on a seven-game losing streak and finished the season with their worst record (5-7) since 2013.
Even with Beck’s hire complete, the Utes still have major items left on their offseason checklist. In the coming weeks, Utah expects decisions from both quarterback Cam Rising and head coach Kyle Whittingham on whether to return next season.
