Ute quarterback Cam Rising is still mulling a potential return to Utah for an eighth season, according to Kyle Whittingham.
The seventh-year quarterback underwent surgery last Wednesday on the season-ending ankle injury he suffered on Oct. 11. Rising finished his season 34 of 66 with 555 passing yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in three starts.
Rising’s decision will likely come in the next few weeks, as the NCAA transfer portal window is set to open on Dec. 9 and close on Dec. 28.
“No definitive word yet,” Whittingham said on Monday. “Cam is still mulling over his options. He just had a surgery on Wednesday of this past week, so that’s what was first and foremost on his mind, getting that surgery completed, and now he’ll have time to make a decision now that that’s done.
“The next big thing is making that decision on which direction he wants to go and we expect to have those conversations with Cam starting up probably as early as this week to see where he’s at.”
Rising’s season with the Utes was marred by injury. He previously suffered a right hand injury when he was pushed into a table of Gatorade coolers on the sideline fo Rice-Eccles Stadium on Sept. 7. From that point, Utah’s star quarterback missed three consecutive games and was a game-time decision until he earned the nod against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
In that game, Rising came up limping after an early tackle. He then threw three interceptions and completed only 43.2% of his passes before being announced out for the season.
