The Utes move up in the college football rankings after Florida State’s collapse

AP Top 25: Georgia builds No. 1 lead; Georgia Tech moves in while FSU plummets out.

The Florida State Seminoles went from No. 10 in last week’s AP Top 25 poll to receiving zero votes this week after getting dominated by Boston College.

With that — and an easy Week 1 win over Southern Utah — the Utah Utes moved up one spot to No. 11 this week.

No. 1 Georgia strengthened its lead in the college football rankings with a blowout win against Clemson, while in-state rival Georgia Tech joined the Bulldogs in the poll for the first time since 2015.

The Bulldogs received 57 of 62 first-place votes, up from 46 in the preseason. The other five went to No. 2 Ohio State. The rest of the top five features No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Notre Dame, with Oregon falling from third to seventh after a close win against Idaho.

Georgia Tech, which beat Georgia State on Saturday, jumped into the poll at No. 23 thanks largely to its Week 0 win against then-No. 10 Florida State in Ireland. It was the Yellow Jackets’ first win against an AP top-10 team at the time of the game since a walk-off blocked field goal return touchdown against the Seminoles in 2015. Georgia Tech finished 3-9 in 2015, but it appeared in the poll that September. Its leap into this week’s poll ends the third-longest poll drought among the Power 4. Only Rutgers (Nov. 18, 2012) and Vanderbilt (Jan. 7, 2014) have gone longer without appearing in the Top 25.

Despite dominating Florida State on Monday, Boston College just missed out on a ranking this week.

The biggest drops belonged to ACC favorites Florida State and Clemson. The Seminoles are out of the poll after their 0-2 start, while the Tigers tumbled 11 spots to No. 25.

Miami is the highest-ranked ACC team, vaulting seven spots to No. 12 following its 41-17 win at Florida. The ACC owns the bottom four spots in the Top 25 with Louisville, Georgia Tech, NC State and Clemson. Louisville and Georgia Tech are the two poll newcomers, while Florida State and Texas A&M fell out.

USC joined Miami as a big riser, as it climbed 10 spots to No. 13 following its 27-20 win against LSU in Las Vegas. LSU slipped five spots to No. 18.

Saturday’s biggest game is clear: No. 3 Texas visits No. 10 Michigan at the Big House at noon ET. It’s Michigan’s first time hosting a nonconference game against an AP top-five team since 1991 against Florida State.

The other Top 25 matchup will be No. 14 Tennessee vs. No. 24 NC State at 7:30 p.m. ET in Charlotte.
