Alex Smith and Randy Moss will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as members of the 2024 class.
Smith, Utah’s star quarterback from 2002 to 2004, and Moss, a star wide receiver at Marshall from 1996 to 1997, were announced as 2024 inductees Sunday. The full class will be announced Monday afternoon.
The Hall of Fame said the 2024 class will include 19 First Team All-America players and three coaches. The class will be inducted during the National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas on Dec. 10.
Moss made an instant impact in 1996, his first season with Marshall, by scoring a school record 29 touchdowns (28 receiving, 1 rushing) and leading the Thundering Herd to the NCAA Division I-AA national title. In 1997, Moss recorded 25 touchdowns for 1,647 yards and won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as college football’s top receiver. He also finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting that season.
The Minnesota Vikings drafted Moss with the No. 21 pick of the 1998 NFL draft, and he went on to have a standout 16-year NFL career with six Pro Bowl selections. He caught 982 passes for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
Smith became Utah’s starter as a sophomore in 2003 when he threw for 15 touchdowns and 2,247 yards. He set multiple records as a junior in 2004, including Utah’s school record for single-season touchdown passes (32), which he still holds, and the most passing yards (2,952) and pass completion percentage (67.5 percent) in the Mountain West Conference.
In 2004, Smith led the Utes to their first-ever 12-0 season and a BCS bowl berth in the Fiesta Bowl. He passed for 328 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Pitt and won Fiesta Bowl MVP honors.
The San Francisco 49ers drafted Smith with the No. 1 pick in the 2005 draft and spent his 16-year career with the Niners, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Commanders. The three-time Pro Bowler received the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award after recovering from a gruesome leg injury.
Smith becomes the first player from Utah to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.
