The Utah football team still has four Pac-12 Conference games to play this season.
But some news this week makes their impending move to the Big 12 feel just that much more imminent.
The Big 12 Conference announced on Wednesday its 16-team, four-year scheduling matrix for the 2024-27 football seasons.
For those who enjoy Utah’s in-state rivalry with BYU, there’s good news — the teams will face each other each of the next four seasons.
During the four-year span, all Big 12 teams will play one another at least once at home and once on the road. Some matchups will occur over three seasons while others take place in all four.
The Big 12 also looked to maintain its nine-game conference schedule featuring a 5/4, 4/5 home/away rotation for all 16 schools. Utah will host four Big 12 games in 2024, while traveling for five.
Utah will host BYU at Rice-Eccles Stadium in 2024 and 2026, while the Utes and Cougars will play each other at LaVell Edwards Stadium in 2025 and 2027.
Utah and BYU have a long history, but have not played since Sept. 11, 2021.
In something of a scheduling quirk, Utah will actually have 10 opponents from the Big 12 on its 2024 schedule — but its rematch against Baylor (which was secured before the Pac-12′s implosion and Utah’s move to the Big 12) will count as a nonconference game.
The Utes and Bears will face off at Rice-Eccles on Sept. 14, 2024.
Utah has previously faced 11 of the 15 other teams that will be a part of the Big 12 as of 2024.
The Utes’ 2024 conference slate will feature some teams that haven’t been to Salt Lake City in awhile, and one that Utah has never faced.
TCU will be coming to town for the first time since 2010. Iowa State, meanwhile, hasn’t been to Utah since 1975. The Utes haven’t faced Houston since 1978 and Oklahoma State since 1945.
The ‘24 schedule will also feature Utah’s first-ever game against Central Florida.
