College football voters in the AP Top 25 were more impressed with Utah’s 52-7 road win over Oregon State than with Boise State’s 59-37 home victory over Hawaii.
That makes sense, after OSU lost by three points at Hawaii in early September. In any case, the Utes moved ahead of Texas, a 34-27 loser to now-No. 5 Oklahoma, and Boise State to No. 13 in the poll published Sunday. No. 14 Boise State will play at BYU on Saturday night.
Arizona State, Utah’s opponent Saturday (4 p.m.) at Rice-Eccles Stadium, moved ahead of Iowa to No. 17. Iowa lost 17-12 to Penn State. The Pac-12′s Oregon is now No. 12 after a 45-3 defeat of California. No. 25 Washington returned to the rankings via a 51-27 win at Arizona.
The Utes (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) will be involved in their 10th matchup of ranked teams in a Pac-12 game since 2014. Utah is 4-5 in those games. The most recent contest at Rice-Eccles Stadium came in 2016, when No. 4 Washington scored a late touchdown on a punt return to beat No. 17 Utah, 31-24.
The Utes moved up one spot to No. 14 in the Coaches Poll, ahead of Texas. Arizona State made a huge jump in that poll, going from No. 24 to No. 17.
