After stumbling into the season with a loss to a lower-division opponent last week, the Utah State football team bounced back on Saturday.
The Aggies still lost, but they put up a fight against the Big Ten’s Washington, losing 16-14 to the 19th-ranked Huskies in Seattle when quarterback Grady Brosterhous’ pass on the final play was tipped and intercepted.
USU fell to 1-32 all-time against current members of the Big Ten.
The Aggies had a shot for the win on the game’s final play from the Washington 44-yard line, but Brosterhous’ pass was tipped and intercepted by Rahshawn Clark.
Brosterhous, a Virginia transfer who replaced McCae Hillstead this week, went 17 of 28 for 196 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
The Aggies scored on a 7-yard pass from Brosterhous to Eli Wood with 1:56 remaining in the game to make it 16-14, but couldn’t come up with a recovery on the ensuing onside kick.
USU forced a punt on Washington’s possession before its final drive ended with the interception.
After Washington took a 3-0 lead with a field goal early in the second quarter, Utah State struck back in a big way. Brosterhous hit receiver Javon Robinson with a pass over the middle of the field, and Robinson rambled for a 78-yard touchdown.
The Huskies bounced back with an eight-play, 65-yard drive, capped by Ansu Sanoe’s 1-yard TD run.
In a scoreless third quarter, each team punted the ball three times before Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. broke loose for a 36-yard run on the final play of the quarter. The Huskies drove to the Utah State 8-yard line but had to settle for a field goal.
Utah State was coming off a season-opening 29-17 loss to FCS opponent Idaho State. USU is getting ready for its first campaign in the new-look Pac-12.
Washington opened the season with a 24-10 win over Washington State last week.
Utah State is scheduled to visit Utah on Saturday, Sept. 19 (1:30 p.m., Ch. 13).
