Real Salt Lake’s winless streak in Major League Soccer reaches eight games

With a 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids, RSL falls out of playoff position.

Real Salt Lake ended its tough run through August with a thud.

Playing its ninth game of the month, RSL lost 1-0 to the host Colorado Rapids in a Major League Soccer match on Saturday night.

It was the second loss of the week for RSL at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado; the first was a 3-0 blowout by Mexico’s Club Leon in a Leagues Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday.

On Saturday, RSL’s winless streak in MLS action reached eight games — its last win was a 2-1 home victory over Colorado on May 16.

And with the win on Saturday, the Rapids retained the Rocky Mountain Cup for the third straight season. Each team won a game and had an aggregate three goals in the season series. In case of such a tie, the regional rivalry’s Cup does not change hands.

A defensive lapse by RSL helped Colorado walk away with the win. In the 58th minute, the Rapids’ Youssef Maziz sent a corner kick to the far post, and RSL left defender Reggie Cannon unmarked. Cannon made a late run toward the net and scored on a header.

After a strong first half of the season, RSL (8-9-4) has slipped to 10th place in the Western Conference, just out of playoff position. Colorado (10-11-1), meanwhile, moved up to seventh place.

RSL will return home to face third-place LAFC on Saturday, Sept. 5 (7:30 p.m., Apple TV), at America First Field.
