Real Salt Lake rolls toward playoffs with most points in club history

RSL rallies for 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in regular-season finale, breaking a franchise record set in 2012.

Real Salt Lake rallied to beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on Saturday night in Sandy, setting a club record for most points in a Major League Soccer season.

RSL (16-7-11, 59 points) finished the regular season in third place in the Western Conference and will have home-field advantage in a three-game series in the first round of the playoffs.

This year’s team broke the club record of 57 points in 2012. With 16 victories this season, RSL also matched its second-highest total for wins in a season (2013, 2019), behind only the 17 wins in 2012.

After Ryan Gauld scored in the 58th minute to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead, RSL got an equalizer from Diego Luna in the 73rd minute, then scored on an own goal in the 83rd minute.

Luna received a long pass from Braian Ojeda, steered the ball toward the box and fired a shot through a crowd of Vancouver defenders for the goal.

RSL had a 14-10 edge in shots, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Salt Lake goalkeeper Zac MacMath had no saves, while Vancouver’s Isaac Boehmer notched five.

RSL is set to face sixth-place Minnesota United in the first round of the playoffs, which begin next weekend. The two teams battled to a pair of draws this season: 1-1 at Minnesota on April 6, and 0-0 at America First Field on Oct. 2.
