Real Salt Lake has made another big signing, as the team begins its push for the playoffs.
Portuguese attacker Diogo Gonçalves, who joins the team on a reported $3 million transfer from FC Copenhagen in Denmark, could be ready to suit up for RSL as early as Aug. 24.
“I am very happy to arrive at Real Salt Lake and take this step forward in my career,” Gonçalves said in a statement Friday. “Major League Soccer’s growth is a great thing – this League has everything to take the next steps – and my objective is to work hard, help the Club, and obviously provide goals and assists to lift RSL to the highest level.”
Gonçalves, 27, is already in Utah and training with RSL, the club said. He will be classified as a Designated Player under Major League Soccer’s roster rules.
“Always elated to add another very technical, aggressive and versatile attacker to our setup, as Diogo can no doubt help us in every phase of our game,” RSL Chief Soccer Officer Kurt Schmid said in a news release. “Diogo is a player that has been successful both at home in Portugal and abroad, gaining experience at Copenhagen and facing all types of situations there the last 18 months. His Champions League tests demonstrate the high standard he holds. We expect him to expand and impact our attack, and with the integration of the other summer additions, and are excited to see the group mesh here during the final stretch into the MLS Cup Playoffs.”
Gonçalves scored 21 goals and had eight assists over the last 18 months in Denmark. The attacker’s career has included stints with Benfica in Portugal and Nottingham Forest in the English Football League Championship.
Gonçalves is RSL’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, joining newcomers Benji Michel, Lachlan Brook and Javain Brown.
He is signed through the 2026 season with team options for 2027 and 2028.
Gonçalves will wear No. 10 for RSL.
