Real Salt Lake overcame deficits in both halves of the game to defeat the Colorado Rapids 5-3 on Saturday night in Sandy and extend its Major League Soccer unbeaten streak to 10 games.
Chicho Arango and Andrés Gómez scored two goals each, and Anderson Julio added an insurance goal in extra time as RSL rallied for the victory.
After trailing 3-2 in the 85th minute, RSL scored three goals to claim the victory.
Arango now has 13 goals and seven assists in 14 MLS games this season.
With the victory, first-place Real Salt Lake (8-2-4) evened the season series against the Rapids (6-5-3) at 1-1. This season’s Rocky Mountain Cup — awarded to the winner of the season series between the regional rivals — will come down to a July 20 match at Colorado. The Rapids handed RSL its only home loss of the season, 2-1, on March 9.
Colorado’s Cole Bassett scored in the fifth minute on Saturday night, and Rafael Navarro in the 19th minute, with an assist from Sam Vines, to give the Rapids a 2-0 lead.
Arango scored in the 23rd minute, and Gómez scored in the 40th minute with an assist from Diego Luna to even the score at 2-2.
The Rapids regained the lead with Djordje Mihailovic’s goal in the 56th minute.
Arango added his second goal in the 85th minute to even the score at 3-3, before Gómez notched the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute.
Julio then made it 5-3 with a goal in extra time.
RSL had a 20-15 edge on shots, while each team had 10 shots on goal. Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Zac MacMath made seven saves, while Colorado’s Zack Steffen had five.
RSL will return to action next Saturday night at Dallas (6:30 p.m. MDT, Apple TV).
