Dwyane Wade, the 13-time All-Star, three-time NBA champion, and Hall of Fame shooting guard who purchased a share of the Utah Jazz, revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney 13 months ago.
Wade talked about diagnosis on “The Why with Dwyane Wade” podcast. Fighting problems with weak urination, the 43-year-old asked his doctor for a full-body scan — and a tumor on his kidney was discovered in late 2023, he said.
Doctors removed 40% of his right kidney on Dec. 18, 2023, Wade said. After surgery, the tumor was biopsied and confirmed to be cancerous in nature.
“I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life,” Wade said.
“I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me. In that process of my weakness, I found strength in my family, in my friends, in my group.”
Wade joined the Utah Jazz’s ownership group in April 2021 after a 16-year NBA career spent largely with the Miami Heat. This summer, Wade commentated on Olympic basketball games for NBC, and a statue of him was unveiled outside of Miami’s Kaseya Center.
Now, Wade spends time largely on his slew of businesses; he’s also attended Jazz and Utah Hockey Club games this season.
