The Utah Jazz’s season is over.
After a 31-51 campaign, there’s plenty of work to do this offseason.
These are the key dates for the months ahead.
The NBA Draft Lottery
Sunday, May 12
The Jazz’s second-half tailspin will give the team the eighth-worst record in the NBA — and that’s important. The Jazz currently have just a .4% chance of falling back to 11th in the lottery, at which point the top-10 protected pick would go to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the 2021 Derrick Favors trade.
Utah has a 6% chance of jumping up to the No. 1 overall pick, a 6.3% for No. 2 and a 6.7% chance for No. 3.
The NBA Draft
June 26-27
If the Jazz stay put at No. 8 in the lottery (a 34.5% likelihood), the team will have its own first-round pick; a late first-round pick acquired in the Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji deal; and either Memphis or Washington’s (the most favorable) second-round pick as part of the Simone Fontecchio trade.
As it stands, Utah would pick 8th, 27th and 31st.
Draft experts say this year’s class is not particularly strong, with international prospects Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr and Nikola Topić atop many of the recent mock drafts.
NBA free agency
June 30
The Jazz will have a chance to extend All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen, who is entering the final year of his contract, in August. Even if they opted not to extend the big man, the money owed to Markkanen ($18 million), John Collins ($26.5 million), Collin Sexton ($18 million), and Jordan Clarkson ($14 million) next year won’t leave the Jazz with a huge pot to make a splash in free agency.
Summer League
July
Utah Jazz Summer League is scheduled to run July 8-10 in Salt Lake City. The NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League will go from July 12-22.
