Tribune revamps NBA podcast with a little help from Utah Jazz PA voice Dan Roberts

A new name, new moderator, and a familiar voice to Jazz fans is lending his talents to the podcast.

Fall has arrived and the NBA season is less than a month away.

After a successful 2020-21 regular season, the Utah Jazz will look to take the next step in its journey to a championship.

We at the Tribune are gearing up for the new season as well. A few weeks ago, we asked you to help us rename the “Jazz Weekly Run” podcast, which we are revamping for the new season.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new name!

Introducing the “How ‘Bout This Jazz” podcast!

The name is an homage to the phrase longtime Jazz PA voice Dan Roberts would use to hype up the crowd during games.

Each week on the “How ‘Bout This Jazz” podcast, Tribune Jazz beat reporters Andy Larsen and Eric Walden will be talking about the latest Jazz news, matchup analysis, as well as give you their take on what else is happening in the Association.

The host/moderator is the Tribune’s Xoel Cardenas, who is also a former sportswriter, columnist and news editor.

The trio will be bringing a fun, multiple-topic podcast featuring guests, in-depth analysis, and a fresh, informative perspective on the Jazz and the NBA — all from the reporters you know and trust.

Best of all: The podcast is free!

Roberts recorded the voice introduction to the podcast and is the podcast’s first guest. Roberts has been the in-arena voice of the Jazz since the team’s arrival to Utah in 1979. He also was the PA voice for the ABA’s Utah Stars in the 1970s, and was the announcer for one of the most famous college basketball games of all time: The 1979 NCAA championship between Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s Michigan State against Larry Bird’s Indiana State at the Huntsman Center.

In the first episode of the revamped podcast, Roberts talks to the “How ‘Bout This Jazz” (HBTJ) trio about how he got into the announcing game, calling two NBA Finals, as well as his favorite Jerry Sloan memory. Roberts also talks Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, as well as the respect he has for Jazz coach Quin Snyder.

The episode launches Thursday morning! Find it and all “How ‘Bout This Jazz” episodes wherever you get your podcasts. We’ll also have a story with a link to the episode on our site Thursday.

Listeners of the Trib’s “Jazz Weekly Run” podcast won’t need to update their podcast feeds, and new episodes will be available on every major podcast platform.
