Owen Hirschi
School: Jordan
Grade: Senior
Sport: Swimming
As Owen Hirschi’s prep swimming career comes to an end, the Beetdiggers’ senior will relish his last moments on the podium.
Hirschi was tied for the fastest time in the Class 4A boys field for the 50-yard freestyle, at a time of 21.94 seconds, as the state swim championships approached this weekend. In the 100-yard free, he had the best time for the current 4A season.
“There’s some kids that haven’t been added quite yet,” said ahead of last weekend’s meet. “They are right at my speed or a millisecond under, but I feel like I’m ready to drop (my) times lower also.”
In the end, Hirschi and Jordan won the 200 medley relay. He finished second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle.
After graduation from Jordan High, Hirschi’s plans include a church mission and then possibly a try at the military.
Of course, things can change. Hirschi’s concentration in swimming though has solidified over the years from an attempt at different strokes and distances to just the couple of current races.
“I remember being put into a whole bunch of stuff and it helped to figure out what I was good at — the sprints in freestyle,” he said.
Hirschi’s still experimenting somewhat. A couple of months ago, he did a practice swim in freestyle but at the much longer 500-yard distance.
“I’ll admit it was not a pretty race. It was so weird, I totally overpaced,” he said, laughing. “But it was kind of nice to swim something else, I guess.”
