After losing the state championship to Desert Hills last year, the Crimson Cliffs Mustangs returned for another shot at the title in a matchup against the Green Canyon Wolves.
On the game’s opening play, wide receiver Tyler West made it clear that the Mustangs were coming out on top.
Quarterback Steele Barben connected with West on a 73-yard dime, setting the tone for Crimson Cliffs’ 33-0 blowout victory at Rice Eccles Stadium earlier this month.
“I think we just needed to get on the board early,” West said afterward. “So we kind of planned that, hoping they’d play that coverage and that’s what ended up working for us.”
Crimson Cliffs’ leader in receiving yards and touchdowns this season, West finished the title game with 138 yards, ten receptions, and two touchdowns. For him, playing well meant nothing in comparison to winning the state title with his teammates.
“We’re all a brotherhood and it’s really hard to explain how much I love all of these guys,” said West. “It’s unbelievable. I want to cry right now. It’s unbelievable.”
