Morgan’s Chase Trussell chases perfection at 3A state wrestling meet

Orem • Morgan High senior Chase Trussell is about as good as anybody you’ll find on a wrestling mat.

In fact, you almost could say he’s perfect.

While perfection is difficult to achieve in anything, Trussell is two matches away from capping a perfect senior season.

Trussell (52-0) advanced to Saturday’s state semifinals in the 220-pound division in the Class 3A state wrestling meet at Utah Valley University with a pin of Summit Academy’s Tyson Clark in Friday’s state quarterfinals.

“I think I came out a little flat,” he said about the quarterfinals. “But by the end of the match, I started getting to where I wanted to be.”

The big stage is no stranger to Trussell. He won the state championship at 195 as a sophomore and took home another title at 220 last season. And now he is two matches away from capturing his third title.

“It’d be awesome,” Trussell said about the prospects of the trifecta. “The first one is a dream. And every one after is just adding to it.”

Still, Trussell knows there is work to be done before he can celebrate another championship.

Standing in his way is a semifinal matchup with Union’s Nolan Bullethead.

But Trussell enters the match with confidence.

“Beat whoever comes at me,” he said. “I’m ready for them.”

With two more wins, Trussell would close out his season at 56-0.

How does one win 56 matches in a single season?

“You don’t overlook anybody,” he said. “You know who you are wrestling and you go out and go as hard as you can no matter who you are wrestling.”

Trussell credits his overall success to his coaches.

“My coaches are always helping me out and pushing me,” he said. “They are always pushing me to get better technique. They are a big factor.”

Trussell hopes to wrestle in college but hasn’t made a decision on a school yet.

Juab leads the team standings with 132.5 points after Day 1. Delta sits second with 112 followed by Morgan with 83.
