Flipping the calendar proves perfect remedy for two Lone Peak swimmers

Bountiful • Things certainly changed for a pair of Lone Peak swimmers Friday.

One swimmer’s performance the day before was as forgettable is it comes. Another standout Knights athlete may have had lingering thoughts that second place was as good as it would get.

But Friday was another day.

Sophomore Summer Shreeve and senior Taylor McAleavy made the necessary adjustments at the Class 6A state swimming meet to grab individual championships at the South Davis Aquatic Center pool.

The Lone Peak girls ended up getting first in three individual races and two relays on the final day, but it wasn’t enough as American Fork took the girls’ team title. On the other hand, the Knights boys captured their second straight team championship with a 149.5-point margin over Pleasant Grove.

“I didn’t look, I didn’t even look. I just went straight to the warm-down pool,” said Shreeve, who refused to check out the final results in Thursday’s 200-yard freestyle, an event that she entered with the top qualifying time. “There was a certain time I was going for, and I think I let it get in my head a little bit. I got too tight, just wasn’t on my game yesterday. I almost didn’t recognize the swim.”

For the record, her place in that event was eighth. But Shreeve bounced back to capture the 100 butterfly crown by beating friend and rival Riyanna Day of American Fork.

“I felt really good my first 50 and saw both of my competitors on either of my sides,” Shreeve said. “I just thought I had to kick it into gear a little bit more.”

McAleavy had a different problem: The invisible line between second and first.

McAleavy was part of one relay that finished runner-up when the Knights were finishing second in the team standings last year in Class 5A.

The addition of another classification didn’t help this year. She started her state meet with Thursday’s 50 freestyle.

Second place again.

The breakthrough finally came Friday. The Lone Peak senior took first in the 100 freestyle then anchored the Knights to victory in a tight 200 freestyle relay, squeezing by Syracuse and American Fork for the win.

“I’m so grateful for all my coaches, friends and family that helped me get through,” McAleavy said.

Her motivation came from seeing the end of her high school career rapidly approaching.

“I just remember coming off the wall and thinking, ‘This is my last 25 [yards] that I’ll ever swim in high school in an individual event,‘” she said. “A lot of excitement and kind of the feeling that ‘Wow, this is it.’ So you give everything you have.”
