Class 5A state swimming: Day 1 standout performers and key numbers

The Colts junior came into the 200-yard individual medley as the Class 5A defending state champion, and he pulled away from teammate Colin Dailey and Woods Cross senior Addison Morris for a second straight title, touching in 1 minute, 55.56 seconds. It was 2 seconds better than second-place Dailey. Kimble also will swim the 100 breaststroke, where he has the second-best qualifying time.

Rachel Oyler, Timpview

The sophomore sped to victory in the 50 freestyle, an event that featured two defending state champions: herself in Class 4A and West’s Fane Wolfgramm in Class 5A. Oyler won with a time of 23.92, beating Wolfgramm’s mark of 24.26. Oyler also anchored Timpview’s third-place team in the 200 medley relay.

Christian Simon, Cottonwood

The defending Class 5A state champion in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events successfully repeated in the 50 by edging Wasatch senior Ian James. Simon’s winning time of 21.53 earned Cottonwood 20 points in the team category, which the Colts’ boys led by nine over Brighton at the end of Day 1.

Number of individual state championships won by the Maile sisters, Mariah and M.J., after Mariah captured the 200 crown. Mariah will try to defend her 100 freestyle Saturday while M.J. races in the 100 butterfly as the reigning 5A state champion.

Winning time for Rachel Butler in the 200 individual medley, bettering her mark of 2:05.55 in the same event last year. Butler fell in 2017 by only two-hundreths of a second to Cottonwood’s Rhyan White, who is scheduled to compete Saturday in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Butler, meanwhile, will try to repeat as 500 freestyle champ on Day 2.
