Class 6A state wrestling: Day 1 standout performers and key numbers

Dylan Chavez, Herriman

(Jon Clifford | For The Tribune) Dylan Chavez, Herriman High.

The Mustangs sit third in the team standings after Day 1 and Chavez is a big reason why. The senior followed a first-round pin with a 6-2 decision against Syracuse’s Camron Eden at 138 pounds and is in good shape to improve on his sixth-place finish at 132 pounds last year.

Dakota Buckner, Copper Hills

(Jon Clifford | For The Tribune) Dakota Buckner, Copper Hills High.

On a day when many results held true to their seeding, Buckner was a glaring exception. Seeded seventh in his half of the 182-pound bracket, Buckner’s recent leg work paid dividends in a state quarterfinal pin with a move the sophomore called the “banana split.”

Jon Hunt, Layton

(Jon Clifford | For The Tribune) Jon Hunt, Layton High.

After a first-round pin in the 220-pound division, the junior broke a sweat but held off Herriman’s Mafi Mahuinga to finish the day unblemished. Next up is Hillcrest’s Keala Mahe, who has just four defeats all season.

Ian Filoso, American Fork

(Jon Clifford | For The Tribune) Ian Filoso, American Fork High.

The Cavemen hung with the traditional powerhouse programs on Day 1, capped by the senior’s 7-3 decision in the 285-pound state quarterfinals against Pleasant Grove’s Keegan Wilkinson. Filoso, who placed fourth at state a year ago, pinned his first opponent in just 26 seconds.
