Hannah Sanderson helps guide Corner Canyon to first all-time win over Timpview

Draper • Many of Hannah Sanderson’s contributions Tuesday night won’t appear in the box score.

The Corner Canyon senior forward locked down Timpview’s top scorer, set jaw-rattling screens for teammates and was a force in the lane to help the Chargers make a little school history.

Corner Canyon rallied from a halftime deficit to beat Timpview 57-52 in a matchup of Region 7 girls’ basketball teams unbeaten in league play. It marked the first time in the school’s five all-time meetings that the Chargers (14-1, 3-0) emerged victorious.

“It was a super fun game, going back-and-forth like that,” said Sanderson, who did make the box score with four points and seven rebounds. “It’s huge. We’re all very excited.”

Junior guard Kemery Martin had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds, and junior forward Jaeden Vaifanua added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the host Chargers, who moved into sole possession of first place in region.

But it was the Corner Canyon defense that sparked the rally from a 27-26 halftime deficit. Timpview struggled after the break, committing five turnovers in a span of six possessions. The Thunderbirds (10-4, 2-1) scored just 10 points in the third quarter, and Corner Canyon’s 9-0 run in the period pushed the Chargers’ lead to double digits.

Timpview junior forward Ella Pope was held to just two field goals and eight points, half of her season average. That was due largely to the defense of Sanderson.

“It’s just working as a team,” Sanderson said. “I always know I have my help defense behind me. But you have to mentally keep hustling to stay on their leading scorers to make sure they don’t get those baskets.”

Shalyn Fano scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the second half for Timpview, which was fortunate to lead at halftime after Corner Canyon missed 13 shots inside of 5 feet.

“We were hungry and we wanted to win,” Corner Canyon coach Jeramy Acker said. “We’ve just got to make our layups and free throws, and it’s a different story in the first half. Even if we make half of the layups that we missed.”
