BYU smoked Colorado on the field in the Alamo Bowl.
But if you only listened to the television broadcast on ABC, that might’ve been difficult to know.
At least that’s how some BYU fans felt Saturday night. Cougar fans and players vented frustration and poked fun at the ESPN broadcast team, saying play-by-play man Dave Pasch and color analyst Dusty Dvoracek couldn’t stop talking about the Buffaloes despite BYU’s dominant performance.
It was predictable that Heisman winner Travis Hunter, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Colorado coach Deion Sanders would get plenty of airtime. The trio have dominated college football headlines all season.
BYU center Connor Pay certainly saw it coming.
“He walked up out of [the production meeting] and said to us, ‘Talk about BYU just a little bit, would you?’” Pasch revealed during the broadcast. “Well, we’re talking about him, and we’re talking about BYU now. I’m sure the fans in Provo would love us to talk about BYU the whole night.”
At that point, BYU was winning 33-7.
And by then, the commentary was too little and too late for some BYU fans.
“Haven’t watched the broadcast version, but from what I’m hearing it didn’t work,” Pay tweeted after the game. “I did my best guys. I’m sorry lol.”
BYU radio analyst Hans Olsen got in on the action. He suggested BYU fans listen to the radio broadcast instead of ESPN.
“Seeing a ton of criticism of the BYU v Colorado TV broadcast. Was it really that bad?” he wrote. “We need to normalize syncing the radio broadcast for people.”
BYU fans had the last laugh in a laugher of a game, winning 36-14.
But on Sunday morning, the headline on ESPN.com told a slightly different story. It read, “Despite bowl loss, Shedeur, Hunter close successful Colorado chapter.”
