It’s back.
After the longest break in the rivalry since the 1940s, BYU-Utah returns to Rice-Eccles Stadium tonight. And the game has a whole new cast of characters.
From BYU’s side, quarterback Jake Retzlaff, wide receiver Chase Roberts and new defensive ace Isaiah Glasker will be making their rivalry debuts. And for the Cougars, everything is on the line — an undefeated record, a potential Big 12 title game appearance, and a chance at the College Football Playoff.
Not the mention, BYU have the unique entourage it brings up north. Rabbis from all over Utah will be coming to see Retzlaff play live after Shabbat ends. And the rivalry’s unlikely lighting rod, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, is entering Austin Collie territory in the eyes of some Utah fans.
As for the Utes, there are plenty of first-timers. Quarterback Isaac Wilson, receiver Dorian Singer and others haven’t been formally introduced to the power of this game. But Utah comes in with its season already finished — now just playing spoiler.
“This is probably their super bowl,” Roberts said. “They don’t have a lot to lose. ... They are a good team so we just got to do what we do. We should take care of business.”
For the Cougars, running back LJ Martin is expected to be fully healthy. But center Connor Pay remains out and wide receiver Kody Epps is also doubtful.
