BYU builds big lead early, hangs on to beat Texas Tech

The Cougars go over 100 yards rushing for first time in a month in the Big 12 victory.

Provo • Darius Lassiter hauled in a 32-yard, one-handed catch early in the second quarter.

It would set up a four-yard touchdown grab by Lassiter a few plays later that gave BYU a 21-7 lead, en route to 27-14 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

The Cougars are now 5-2 and will play Texas in Austin next week.

Quarterback Kedon Slovis finished 15 for 27 for 127 yards and two touchdowns. BYU also rushed for over 100 yards for just the second time this season, ending with 150 yards on 30 carries.

BYU’s defense did most to the work throughout the night. It forced five turnovers and two turnovers on downs.

Cornerback Eddie Heckard came up with two of those turnovers himself. He had an interception and also recovered a fumble for a touchdown that gave the Cougars a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Texas Tech rushed for over 150 yards itself and hung in the game late. Running back Tahj Brooks ran for 109 yards and a touchdown.

His final touchdown, a one-yard rush at the goal line, cut into BYU’s three-score lead late in the fourth quarter.
