Former BYU quarterback Steve Young part of ESPN layoffs

Young had been with ESPN for more than two decades, most recently with its Monday Night Football broadcast.

Former BYU quarterback and NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young was let go by ESPN on Friday.

As part of the company’s latest round of prominent layoffs, Young will no longer be part of ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast or NFL coverage. The news was first reported by Front Office Sports.

Young had been an ESPN personality in some capacity for over two decades, starting with the company in 2000 on its marquee program “Sunday NFL Countdown.”

Throughout his time at ESPN, he helped with NFL Draft and Super Bowl coverage. Most recently, he appeared every week on the pre- and post-game shows for Monday Night Football.

Young was one of 20 ESPN on-air personalities laid off this week. Max Kellerman, Jalen Rose and Jeff Van Gundy were also part of the layoffs.

Before Young was on television, he was a three-time Super Bowl winner with the San Francisco 49ers.

He played at BYU from 1980-83. He threw for over 7,700 yards and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1983. His jersey was retired by the school in 2003.
