BYU wide receiver Kody Epps enters the transfer portal

Epps was expected to be one of BYU’s top returning offensive weapons in the Big 12

BYU wide receiver Kody Epps has entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, multiple sources confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune on Sunday evening.

Epps was BYU’s leading receiver in 2022 before he injured his shoulder in Week 8. He was expected to be one of BYU’s top returning offensive weapons in its first year in the Big 12.

In eight games last year, Epps had 459 yards, six touchdowns and 39 catches. Against Notre Dame, he had 100 yards and two touchdowns. He followed that up with 125 yards against Arkansas the next week — inspiring confidence that he would be able to handle a big role on a Power Five roster.

Epps was going into his sophomore season, but his fourth year at BYU. He did not participate in spring camp as he was rehabbing a shoulder injury.

Epps’ departure throws a wrench into BYU’s plans in the wide receivers room. Receiver was already a position of need for the program going into this offseason. The Cougars essentially only had three experienced players in Epps, Chase Roberts and Keanu Hill. But with Epps gone, the need to find more weapons to surround new quarterback Kedon Slovis becomes even more urgent.

Epps’ was one of the main influences in recruiting Slovis to BYU. Slovis and Epps talked before the quarterback committed and their relationship was growing. Epps would often sit in on quarterback meetings during spring camp to help foster a bond with BYU’s new leader.

Since spring camp ended, BYU has hosted and offered multiple wide receivers. The list includes former Eastern Michigan receiver Darius Lassiter, North Texas transfer Jyaire Shorter and Colorado transfer Chase Sowell.
