Eugene, Ore. • A chant emanating out of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium received scrutiny Saturday night.
During the second half of Oregon’s game against BYU, the fans were filmed chanting, “F--- the Mormons.”
The scene immediately caused outrage online. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called the incident “religious bigotry.”
“Religious bigotry alive and celebrated in Oregon,” Cox wrote on Twitter.
Oregon issued an apology after the game.
“The university apologizes for the despicable chants made by some University of Oregon fans at today’s football game with Brigham Young University,” said Kris Winter, Oregon’s interim vice president for the Division of Student Life. “There is no place for hate, bias or bigotry at the University of Oregon. These actions are simply unacceptable. We will investigate, and we call on our students and campus community to refuse to accept or tolerate this type of behavior.”
The game was broadcast nationally on FOX. However, it was unclear if the broadcast picked up the audio.
When BYU went on the road to USC last year, fans chanted the same thing.
USC also apologized publicly for the incident.
