A rare Hawaii loss in its conference semifinal opened the door for BYU to possibly get the No. 1 overall seed, but it wasn’t opened enough.
However, the Cougars still earned a No. 2 seed, as revealed in Sunday’s Selection Show, in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The entirety of the tournament will take place in Columbus, Ohio.
BYU won the MPSF Tournament championship on Saturday to secure one of five automatic bids. Hawaii used up one of the few at-large bids and earned the No. 1 overall seed.
The Cougars earned a double-bye into the semifinals on May 6, where they will face one of three possible opponents: Penn State, Belmont Abbey or Lewis.
BYU (19-3) is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and vying for a fourth national title. The Cougars haven’t won it all since 2004.
Since 2013, the Cougars have made it to the title game three times, but were unable to win the title.
