The Utah Royals showed their resilience in a win over the host Orlando Pride on Saturday.

First, stormy weather delayed the start of the NWSL game by an hour. Then, the Pride struck first with a goal by Barbra Banda, the second-leading scorer in the league, just before halftime.

But the Royals scored two second-half goals to notch a 2-1 victory and sweep the season series against Orlando, bouncing back from last week’s 4-2 loss to the San Diego Wave.

“I went a bit heavy at halftime,” Utah coach Jimmy Coenraets said in a televised postgame interview. “I just wanted to make sure they understood what we had to do in the second half.”

Cloé Lacasse had a goal and an assist to lead the Royals (12-8-3) to the win, which put them in second place. Orlando (9-12-2) fell to 12th place.

The Pride took a 1-0 lead on Banda’s fast-break goal in the 44th minute. Banda took a long pass, raced past a defender and beat Utah goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn from around the top of the 18-yard box for the score. Banda now has 13 goals this season — second most in the NWSL, trailing only North Carolina’s Ashley Sanchez (15).

Utah evened the score in the 50th minute when Kiana Palacios sent a perfect pass to Lacasse, who scored from short range.

In the 69th minute, Utah’s Lacasse charged into the box and sent a pass back to Paige Cronin, who drilled a shot past Orlando goalkeeper Cosette Morché for the game-winner. It was the league-leading 10th assists of the season for Lacasse. Cronin had entered the game just six minutes earlier.

“I’m proud of this group for pushing through that second half and going home with the three points,” Lacasse said.

Utah had an 18-9 advantage in shots in the game, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. The Royals also had a 60-40 advantage in possession.

Utah is scheduled to return to action at home against the Boston Legacy on Friday, Sept. 4 (7:30 p.m. KMYU, NWSL+).
