Quarterback Zach Wilson has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, according to league sources.
Wilson joins the Dolphins to presumably serve as the backup quarterback for Tua Tagovailoa — a spot on the roster that has hindered the Dolphins under coach Mike McDaniel due to Tagovailoa’s injury history. Over the past three seasons with McDaniel, Miami has a 3-8 record in games that Tagovailoa has missed — he missed six games in 2024 with a concussion and hip injury and five games in 2022 with two different concussions.
Following a draft week trade last year from the New York Jets to Denver, the 25-year-old (who turns 26 in August) spent the 2024 season as the third-string quarterback for the Broncos where he did not appear in a regular-season game.
In just four seasons, Wilson has had an eventful NFL career. Drafted by the New York Jets out of BYU with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson started right away and had the customary rookie growing pains. In 2022, he missed three weeks with a meniscus tear in his right knee before starting the next seven games. Looking to spark his offense, coach Robert Saleh benched Wilson for three games before turning back to him for two of the final four contests.
Wilson was expected to serve as Aaron Rodgers’ backup for the 2023 season, but that all changed when Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury four plays into the regular season. Wilson started 11 games with Saleh once again replacing him as the starter in the middle of the year — only to turn back to him several weeks later.
In 34 games, Wilson has completed 57 percent of his passes (566 of 993 attempts) for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. While with the Jets, he had a record of 12-21 as a starter. Additionally, Wilson has rushed for 498 yards and five touchdowns.
