Sandy • Around this time four years ago, Amy Rodriguez was named captain of the Utah Royals. Now, as coach of the “2.0 version” of the team that starts its season on Saturday, she got to give that honor to one of her players.
The team announced Thursday that forward Paige Monaghan will serve as captain. She said Rodriguez announced it recently in front of the entire team, which voted her as their leader.
“I don’t take it lightly at all,” Monaghan said. “When Amy said my name ... my heart was beating out of my chest and I kind of realized how much it meant to me.
“It’s an honor,” she continued. “I’m ready for it.”
Monaghan said that as captain, she wants to focus on being herself, empower her teammates and create a “competitive, safe and just thriving environment.”
“I feel like I’m just being empowered to continue to be me and to be that voice and just to have a positive environment and a good locker room,” Monaghan said.
