BYU women’s soccer defeats No. 1 UCLA

BYU takes down top-ranked UCLA, move to 5-0 on the season.

BYU women’s soccer beat the No. 1 ranked UCLA Bruins, 3-1, on Thursday night.

“Obviously, this is a huge win for us against an outstanding UCLA team,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “What a great atmosphere for women’s college soccer tonight.”

For the No. 7 Cougars, it was just the fifth time in history they have beaten a top-5 opponent. The Cougars became the first team to score at least three goals against UCLA since 2021. BYU’s 2-0 lead at halftime was the Bruin’s worst deficit since 2016.

Former UCLA Bruin Ellie Walbruch scored the game’s opening goal, tallying her second of the season. Erin Bailey and Rachel McCarthy each pitched in a goal for BYU, while Kendell Petersen ended the night with two assists. All three of the goal scorers came off the bench for the Cougars.

Although UCLA outshot BYU 20-15, the Cougars did a better job of capitalizing on their chances, scoring three of their five shots on goal. The game featured a heavy dose of physicality, with the two teams combining for 16 fouls, 11 of which were assigned to UCLA. Reilyn Turner scored the Bruins’ lone goal for the night.

BYU now moves to 5-0 on the season. They will next play UVU at Clyde Field in Orem on Saturday at 7 p.m.
