Utah Royals hosting World Cup watch parties in Salt Lake City

The U.S. Women’s National Team opens World Cup play Friday against Vietnam.

The Utah Royals won’t take the field until 2024.

But they want you to enjoy soccer with them now.

The NWSL team will host watch parties for the U.S. Women’s National Team during World Cup play.

Soccer fans will take over the Gallivan Center downtown on Friday and Wednesday. The all-ages festivities run from 6-10 p.m. and will include celebrity guest appearances, prizes, and on-site food trucks and beer vendors.

The U.S. faces Vietnam in Friday’s match. On Wednesday, the USWNT faces the Netherlands. Additional watch parties may be announced depending on kickoff times during the tournament’s knockout stages.

New addition

This week, the Royals announced hiring former Reading FC manager Kelly Cousins to be the Utah club’s first sporting director.

“I’m really looking forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to build a roster, a culture and most importantly a place that gives players everything they need to be able to perform at their best,” Cousins said in a news release.

Cousins’ role with the Royals will include scouting and recruiting players, helping coach Amy Rodriguez construct her roster, and hiring technical and support staff.

“Kelly is truly a Swiss army knife of soccer operations — from sporting side strategic planning and squad management infrastructure building, to scouting and recruitment, to coaching, to everything in between — she has done it all,” Utah Royals FC President Michelle Hyncik said in a news release.
