State colleges: Weber State hits 22 3-pointers in 80-point rout of Yellowstone Christian

Southern Utah picks up first men’s basketball victory at Eastern Washington since 1992.

Ogden • Darweshi Hunter had 17 points off the bench to lift Weber State to a 124-44 win over NCCAA-member Yellowstone Christian on Saturday.

The Wildcats set a program record with 22 3-pointers (in 33 attempts). Weber State finished 47 for 69 (68.1%) and had 15 players enter the scoring column.

Michal Kozak had 14 points for Weber State (5-3), which earned its fourth straight home victory. Dontay Bassett added 13 points and Cody Carlson had 12 points.

It was the first time this season Weber State scored at least 100 points.

TJ Rivera had 17 points for the Centurions and Derrian Reed added 13 points.

Southern Utah 99, Eastern Washington 94 • In Cheney, Wash., Tevian Jones had 27 points as the Thunderbirds edged past the Eagles.

Jones hit all 10 of his free throw attempts as the Thunderbirds went 10 for 10 form the line in the last minute to secure SUU’s first victory in Cheney since 1992.

John Knight III added 21 points and Aanen Moody had 14 points for Southern Utah (10-2, 5-1 Big Sky Conference). Maizen Fausett added 12 points and nine rebounds and Dre Martin 12 points with eight rebounds.

The 99 points were a season best for Southern Utah.

Jacob Davison had nine 3-pointers 31 points for the Eagles (3-5, 2-1), who had 19 3-pointers. Kim Aiken Jr. added 23 points and 12 rebounds. Tanner Groves had 21 points.

Eastern Washington defeated Southern Utah 75-63 on Thursday.

Utah Valley game canceled • Utah Valley’s game scheduled for Saturday night at Seattle University was canceled due to COVID-19 related issues within the Redhawks program.

The game is not currently set to be made up but could be if the teams find themselves with a common off date in the future.

Conference standings and seeding for the WAC tournament will be based on a formula that takes into account both winning percentage and the percentage of games played.

Women’s basketball

Utah Valley 78, Seattle 66 • In Orem, Nehaa Sohail scored a career-high 21 points and Josie Williams added 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Wolverines completed a weekend sweep of the Redhawks.

UVU (4-3, 2-2 WAC) jumped out to a 25-7 lead after the opening quarter and held off several spirited comeback attempts from Seattle (4-7, 0-2).

Utah game postponed • Utah’s game against California, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID issues within the Bears program. An update on the direction of rescheduling the contest will be made available at a later date, according to a news release.

Utah State game postponed • Due to a positive COVID-19 case within the Utah State women’s basketball program, the game between the Aggies and San Diego State, slated for Saturday, was postponed.

The rescheduled date will be announced once finalized by the Mountain West and both institutions.

Gymnastics

No. 11 Arizona State 196.275, No. 10 BYU 196.250 • In Tempe, Ariz., the Cougars posted a season-high total but were edged out by the Sun Devils at Wells Fargo Arena. BYU sophomore Anyssa Alvarado won the uneven bars with a career-high score of 9.925, and the Cougars earned a total score of 49.350 in the event, their highest since 2019.
