Dixie State shuts down its women’s basketball season due to COVID-19 issues

Trailblazers were forced to cancel five of eight non-conference games. They finish season with 1-2 record.

A sign stands at Dixie State University on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, in St. George, Utah. The school announced Tuesday that its women's basketball team was cancelling the rest of its 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 issues in the program.

Dixie State University announced on Tuesday that the Trailblazer Women’s Basketball team is cancelling the remainder of its 2020-21 season and suspending all activities in the program.

School athletic department officials said the decision was made for health and safety related reasons as COVID-19 continues to surge in Utah.

“While we are disappointed with this for our women’s basketball program and its coaches and student-athletes, it is 100% the right call,” Dixie State athletic director Jason Boothe said in a statement. “We have kept the safety and well-being as the top priority for our student-athletes throughout the pandemic, and given the issues this team is facing, this decision is right in line with that top priority.

“Once we get through the pandemic and all the issues it causes for everyone involved, we look forward to having the team back in action next school year,” he added.

The Trailblazers had five of their eight non-conference games canceled due to pandemic-related issues. They finished their shortened season with a 1-2 record.
