Quin Snyder agrees to extension with Utah Jazz

Head coach Quin Snyder has agreed to a contract extension with the Utah Jazz, the team announced Saturday.

Snyder had two years remaining on his deal, and was granted a multiyear extension beyond that, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who was the first to report the story. The agreement means Snyder should be leading the Jazz for at least the next four seasons.

In five seasons as the Jazz’s coach, he has accumulated a record of 227-183 (.554). After beginning with a pair of sub-.500 campaigns, he has guided the Jazz to a combined 149-97 (.606) record over the past three seasons. Utah qualified for the postseason in each of those three campaigns, and reached the Western Conference semifinals in both 2017 and ’18.

Snyder is renowned throughout the league for both his player development skills and his defensive acumen. The Jazz finished as the top-rated defense in the league for the 2017-18 season, and as the No. 2 defense last season.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with Quin and appreciate the collaboration and innovation he’s brought to our franchise,” former Jazz president and current Larry H. Miller CEO Steve Starks said in a statement. “He is one of the most respected coaches in the NBA, and we are excited to solidify his leadership of the Jazz for years to come.”

The Jazz underwent a major roster overhaul this summer in the wake of their first-round postseason defeat at the hands of the Houston Rockets, with an emphasis on generating more offensive firepower. Prior to the NBA draft, the team executed a multiplayer trade with the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire veteran point guard Mike Conley. Then, in free agency, Utah agreed to deals with Bojan Bogdanovic, Ed Davis, Jeff Green, and Emmanuel Mudiay among others.

Between the new look of the roster and Snyder’s coaching, the Jazz are widely considered contenders for the Western Conference title this coming season.

“I am thankful that Quin will continue to be our head coach for the long-term. He is a cornerstone of our success,” said Greg Miller, the Jazz’s representative on the NBA’s Board of Governors. “His work ethic, creativity and ability to orchestrate team chemistry are just a few of the things that make him so valuable to our franchise. I look forward to continued improvement as we work to bring a championship to Utah.”
