The No. 19 University of Utah volleyball team continued its winning ways on Friday with a dominant three-set victory — 25-13, 25-11, 25-20 — over Portland State in the Wolverine Classic at Utah Valley in Orem.
The Utes improved to 6-0 on the season, with five of those wins coming in three sets.
Freshman Zoe Weatherington had her best match as a Ute, leading the team with 16 kills while hitting .636. Dani Drews and Kenzie Koerber both posted double-doubles as Drews registered 13 kills and 10 digs and Koerber had 12 kills with 13 digs. Koerber hit .500 for the match.
Utah setter Saige Ka’aha’aina-Torres finished with 39 assists — the second time this week she has had 39 assists in a three-set match.
Berkeley Oblad had nine kills while hitting .533 with five blocks.
The Utes opened the day by sweeping previously undefeated UC Davis, 27-18, 25-17, 25-23. Koerber had 17 kills, Brianna Doehrmann had nine digs and Ka’aha’aina’-Torres added 35 assists.
No. 13 BYU 3, Sam Houston State 1 • The Cougars earned their second win of the BYU Doterra Classic, defeating Sam Houston State (24-26, 25-13, 25-16, 25-18) Friday at the Smith Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Madelyn Robinson had a game-high 16 kills with 11 digs, while senior McKenna Miller had 15 kills, three digs and three blocks. Freshman Whitney Bower added 43 assists, eight digs, three aces, three blocks and two kills.
“I really liked our fight the entire match,” BYU head coach Heather Olmstead said.
