Provo • The ninth-ranked BYU women’s volleyball team opened its season with a pair of sweeps Friday in the BYU Nike Invitational, defeating Boise State 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 and Utah Valley 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.
In the win over the Broncos, freshman setter Whitney Bower made her debut as a Cougar with 31 assists, five aces, five digs, a kill and a block. Bower’s five aces set a BYU freshman rally era record.
Senior McKenna Miller had a match-high 13 kills and junior Kennedy Eschenberg followed with nine.
Freshman Kate Grimmer came out with six blocks and seven kills while senior Mary Lake contributed 18 digs for BYU.
In the victory over the Wolverines, junior Taylen Ballard-Nixon had a career-high 12 kills, Miller also had 12 kills and Eschenberg added 11.
No. 16 Marquette 3, Utah Valley 0 • In Provo, the Golden Eagles swept the Wolverines 25-14, 25-18, 25-22 in the first match of the BYU Nike Invitational.
Kazna Tarawhiti had 13 kills and 10 digs for the Wolverines.
Women’s soccer
Utah Valley 1, Cal Poly 0 • In Orem, Julianna Carter scored in the 38th minute to lead the Wolverines to victory in the team’s home opener at Clyde Field.
The win pushes UVU’s record to 1-2-0 on the season, while Cal Poly falls to 0-2-1.
Utah 3, Utah State 0 • Holly Daugirda, Haylee Cacciacarne and Ali Schinko all scored for the Utes (1-2-0), who unveiled their new Ute Field on Friday.
Utah senior Carly Nelson had two saves for the 14th shutout of her career. Freshman keeper Diera Walton had six saves for the Aggies (1-2-0).
BYU 7, Southern Utah 0 • In Provo, the No. 14 Cougars, picked up their third straight win to open the season, defeating SUU (0-2) in their home opener. BYU scored five times in the second half and had 28 shots for the game.
Men’s soccer
Utah Valley 1, Cal Poly 0 • In Orem, Blake Frischknecht scored in the 69th minute and the Wolverines won their sixth straight season-opener, beating the Mustangs in front of 3,488 fans at Clyde Field.
