Shorter Speed Week set for Tuesday launch at Salt Flats

It's going to be a shorter than normal Speed Week this year.

Wet weather last week has delayed the beginning of the world renowned event as organizers from the sponsoring Southern California Timing Association make certain conditions for land speed trials are safe.

According to Jinx Vesco, part of the Turbinator II team from Rockville, SCTA president Bill Latin said the trials are expected to begin on the famed course east of Wendover on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.

Turbinator II, which became the first wheel-driven vehicle to go over 500 miles per hour last year, will be first up Tuesday to open the meet, which is scheduled to end Friday.

Drivers and vehicle owners from all over the world have converged on the Salt Flats for the annual event.
