Part-time Utah resident Grace Summerhays advanced to match play in the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship by finishing in a tie for 35th place in stroke play Tuesday in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Summerhays, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, but spends summers in Utah with her family, shot a 74 in the second round of stroke play at SentryWorld and finished at 3-over-par 147.
She will face Sarah Arnold of St. Charles, Illinois, in the first round of match play Wednesday. Arnold tied for 21st place in stroke play at 1-over 145.
South Jordan’s Tess Blair shot a 79 in the second round and finished at 8-over 152, missing the cut.
Earlier this month, Summerhays celebrated her 15th birthday by becoming the second woman ever to reach match play at the Utah State Amateur. In the first round of match play, she lost 4 and 2 to former Utah State golfer Brennan Coburn.
Summerhays’ brother, Preston, won the State Am for the second straight year, and also won the U.S. Junior Amateur last week in Toledo, Ohio.
