Provo • Brock Hale hit a grand slam and Jackson Cluff had four hits, including a home run, and six runs batted in to power the No. 25 BYU baseball team to a 17-9 trouncing of San Francisco on Saturday on Senior Day at Larry H. Miller Field in the final home game of the season.
Mitch McIntyre and Casey Jacobsen also homered for BYU, which blew the game open by scoring five runs in the second inning — four coming on Hale’s slam, his team-leading ninth home run of the season — and six more in the third, with the big blows being a three-run homer by McIntyre and a three-run double off the bat of Cluff, who had two doubles and scored four runs on the day.
Danny Gelalich and Noah Hill each had two hits and scored three runs for BYU, which matched its scoring output with 17 hits against six Dons pitchers.
Reliever Blake Inouye (2-1), the fourth of five pitchers the Cougars used, earned credit for the victory. The right-hander allowed one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 41⁄3 innings.
BYU takes on Utah on Tuesday night at Smith’s Ballpark before heading to Santa Clara for the final WCC series of the regular season next weekend.
Washington 5, Utah 4 • In Seattle, the Huskies scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning en route to a victory that extended the Utes’ losing streak to nine games.
Shea Kramer had two hits, including a homer, and scored two runs for Utah. Oliver Dunn, Chase Fernlund and Briley Knight had two hits apiece.
Utes starting pitcher Joshua Tedeschi (5-5) took the loss. The lefty allowed just two hits, but issued six walks and allowed five earned runs in 42⁄3 innings.
Softball
Oregon State 4, Utah 2 • In Corvallis, Ore., the Beavers overcame four errors and rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Utes, who stranded 12 runners on base in a frustrating season finale.
Oregon State (26-19, 8-14 Pac-12) trailed 2-1 before Frankie Hammoude’s three-run double with one out in the bottom of the sixth, which proved to be the difference.
Ally Dickman went 2 for 4 for the Utes (19-35, 7-17 ), who were just 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position.
Pitcher Hailey Hilburn (5-15), who had a sacrifice fly, went the distance for the Utes, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits in six innings. She struck out one and walked two.
Santa Clara 4, BYU 3, 9 innings • In Santa Clara, Calif., the WCC champion Cougars closed out the regular season with an extra-inning loss to the Broncos, who won on Kelsie Barnard’s one-out RBI single to center in the ninth.
Allie Hancock had two doubles for BYU (29-24, 12-3), which secured its sixth consecutive conference title during Friday night’s doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara.
