State colleges: Aggies never trail in big victory over Air Force

Logan • Sam Merrill and Neemias Queta had double-doubles on Saturday night and Utah State never trailed in beating Air Force 79-62.

Merrill had 18 points and 12 assists, Queta had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Quinn Taylor added 16 points and Brock Miller scored 15 for the Aggies (11-4, 1-1 Mountain West Conference).

Utah State pulled away to its largest lead of the first half with a 14-1 run to make it 41-24 and went into the break with a 44-28 lead.

The Falcons (5-9, 0-2) cut the deficit to 61-52 and that was the only time the margin was in single digits during the second half.

Keaton Van Soelen had 16 points and Lavelle Scottie added 14 for Air Force.

Utah State had a 39-19 edge in rebounds and a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Southern Utah 90, Weber State 82, OT • In Ogden, Andre Adams tied his career best with 18 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to help Southern Utah beat Weber State in overtime and snap a four-game skid.

Adams, who redshirted last season after transferring from Arizona State, has back-to-back double-doubles — the first two of his career. Cameron Oluyitan and Dre Marin each had 18 points, Brandon Better added 15 and Jacob Calloway scored nine with 10 rebounds for Southern Utah (6-7, 1-3 Big Sky Conference).

The Thunderbirds snapped a six-game losing streak against Weber State and beat the Wildcats for just the ninth time in 41 tries.

Jerrick Harding’s 3-pointer gave Weber State (9-6, 3-1) a one-point lead just 29 seconds into overtime but Marin answered with a 3 and then hit two free throws to spark 14-3 run that made it 86-76 when he made two more foul shots with 52 seconds remaining.

Harding led the Wildcats with 27 points.

Cody John’s 3-pointer gave Weber State a six-point lead with three minutes left in regulation but SUU scored eight of the last 10 points to force OT.

Cal State Bakersfield 73, Utah Valley 71 • In Bakersfield, Calif., Taze Moore had 16 points and scored on a putback at the buzzer to lift the Roadrunners past the Wolverines.

Moore made a pair of free throws to give the Roadrunners 71-68 lead, and Utah Valley tied it at 71 on Ben Nakwaasah’s 3-pointer with 18.1 seconds left.

Jarkel Joiner missed a 3 but Moore hit the layup to seal the victory.

Moore was 5-of-16 shooting and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line. Rickey Holden had 16 points and six assists for Bakersfield (10-5, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference).

Connor MacDougall scored 14 points and Conner Toolson had 13 to lead Utah Valley (11-6, 0-2). Nakwaasah finished with six points on a pair of 3s with five assists.

Women’s basketball

BYU 55, Loyola Marymount 44 • In Provo, the Cougars’ three starting guards scored in the double digits to help BYU (12-3, 4-0 WCC) win its sixth straight game, defeating the Lions (9-7, 2-2) at the Marriott Center.

Brenna Chase led the Cougars with 14 points and four 3-pointers made. Shaylee Gonzales contributed 13 points and seven assists and Paisley Johnson added 10 points and four steals.

Shalae Salmon anchored the post for BYU with eight points, five rebounds and a blocked shot.
